Buffalo are ever present throughout the book, in many different ways. Elmira hitches a ride with some buffalo hunters through the territory. Gus and Pea Eye chase a herd for the thrill, because soon there won't be any buffalo to chase. The tribes are using them for pretty much everything. They were many things to many different people and likely one of the most important resources at the time.
